BSEB LOST RS 4000 CRORE SINCE 2008
ATTEMPT TO CHECK ELECTRICITY THEFT
May 30, 2011, Patna: After successfully introducing food coupons, cash transfers and Essential Services Act, Bihar seems to be toying with a new idea. In a unique advice, the state’s electricity regulatory commission has sent a missive to its electricity board directing it to install pre-paid meters to prevent electricity pilfers.
With the state losing thousands of crores every year to electricity thefts, the Bihar electricity department has come up with this out-of-the-box suggestion which would not only eliminate the cost of meter reading and bill serving, but also prevent the hassles of cutting off electricity supply to those who fail to pay their bills on time.
This will also help improve the cash liquidity of the BSEB. For the pilot study of the scheme BSEB may procure some pre-paid meters and provide them to some domestic consumers.
Subsequently, BSEB may suggest the consumers to purchase the pre-paid meters at their own cost by offering rebate of about 10 per cent in energy charges.
