Love affair ends in suicide at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan

July 12, 2011, Patna: In a shocking incident, a youth allegedly committed suicide in front of his girlfriend and her two women acquaintances after she refused to marry him.

Police said Vidya Shankar, 26, was a BBA student in Bangalore. Son of a railway station master, he had come to his parents' Railway Colony residence at Khagaul during summer vacation. "He had an affair with Archana Kumari, a BA student of IGNOU, for the last two years," the SSP said and added their relationship had soured of late.

Archana and her acquaintances Rita Devi and Dolly were detained by police for interrogation. "Vidya wanted to marry me, but I never said yes to his proposal," Archana said and added her marriage was recently fixed with someone else.

According to her, Vidya called her up on Monday morning, saying he wanted to meet her at the Gandhi Maidan.

"I requested Rita-di and Dolly-di to come with me," she said and added they reached the Gandhi Maidan around 3.15pm. "As I said a final 'no' to his proposal to marry him, he threatened to commit suicide," she said and claimed that Vidya then consumed something and repeatedly stabbed self with a knife.

Soon a mob assembled at the spot. While some of them called an ambulance and sent the injured boy to PMCH in a critical condition, others gheraoed the women and even tried to manhandle them. However, police arrived in time and took the women to the police station. Vidya succumbed to his injuries around 5pm.

While eyewitnesses told newsmen that one of the women had stabbed the youth, police would not say whether it was a case of suicide or murder. "It's suspicious case. We would wait till the autopsy report comes," SP (City) Shivdeep Lande said and added the police, in the meantime, are interrogation the women.
